Instagram 449.0.0.0.57 for Android is the current release of Meta's photo and video sharing app, and it is a free download from Google Play. It covers the full service on a phone: the feed, Stories, Reels, direct messages and posting straight from the camera.
Instagram launched on 6 October 2010, created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and today belongs to Meta Platforms. Over the years it has grown from a square-photo app into a mix of social network, video platform and publishing tool. The Android app is where most of that happens. You open it to a feed of posts from accounts you follow, swipe into Stories that disappear after a day, and switch to Reels for short vertical videos. Creating a post takes a few taps: pick a photo or clip, crop it, apply a filter or edit, write a caption and share. Direct messages sit in their own inbox, with voice notes and video calls. Artists and photographers also use it as a public portfolio, which is one of the uses Wikidata lists for the service.

The official website, instagram.com, also links to the store listing. Google Play shows whether your phone is compatible, so you do not need to check the Android version yourself.
A few settings are worth a look straight away. Decide whether the account should be public or private, since that changes who can see your posts and Stories. In the notification settings you can mute likes and keep only messages and comments, which makes the app far less noisy. If storage runs low, clearing the app cache in Android settings frees space without logging you out. And if you manage several profiles, for example a personal one and one for a small business, the app lets you switch between them without signing out each time.
Download only from Google Play. Modified clients that promise to download Stories or hide your online status come from outside developers; they ask for your password and can get the account suspended. Once installed, turn on two-factor authentication in the settings and review which contacts and photos the app can see.
The app is free. There is no fee to post, follow or message; brands pay only if they choose to promote posts.
If you want something lighter, Instagram Lite is in the same category. For text-first conversation, Threads and Twitter are options, while Snapchat focuses on disappearing photo messages.
